The majority of desktop users rely on Windows 10, and the trend has been rising recently. Microsoft's advertising campaign for Windows 11 is not helping.

The market share of Windows 10 on desktop devices has increased worldwide, while the number of Windows 11 users has fallen. Their share most recently stood at 34.9%, compared to 35.6% in October. In the same period, the share of Windows 10 rose by just under one percentage point to 61.8%. These figures are based on measurements by the Irish company Statcounter.

The trend was similar in Germany, although the proportion of Windows 10 users here is higher than in an international comparison. Almost two thirds of desktop computers in Germany were running Windows 10 in November, an increase of one percent compared to the previous month. The opposite trend can be seen with Windows 11, where the number of desktop users fell from 33 percent in October to 30.9 percent in November.

For around two weeks now, Microsoft has been running full-screen ads for Copilot+ laptops on Windows 10 computers. These premium devices contain a neural processor that supports Microsoft's AI applications in Windows 11. The software company had previously used the same method to draw attention to the approaching end of support and tried to convince users to upgrade to the current operating system. Support for Windows 10 will end next October.

However, corporate customers can purchase update support for a further three years and private users for one year. The hardware requirements of Windows 11 also exclude several million Windows 10 devices from an update. In particular, the current version of the operating system requires processors with support for TPM 2.0.

The market share of Microsoft Edge has also fallen. The global market share in the desktop sector fell slightly from 13.6 to 12.9 percent within a month and is therefore lagging behind market leader Chrome. In Germany, usage figures for the Microsoft browser also fell from 16.3% to 15.4%, putting it in third place behind Chrome and Firefox.
