In the run-up to Christmas, O2 is giving its millions of loyal existing customers more data volume. This is now also increasing annually in older tariffs.

TelefĂłnica Deutschland is also introducing the "Grow" component, which applies to newer contract tariffs, for existing customers on older tariffs at the turn of the year. This means that the data volume included in the tariff will grow by one to 10 gigabytes per year, even for long-standing existing customers. The customers affected will be informed by text message.

In the "Grow" tariffs, customers receive more inclusive volume each year as their contract term increases. This will now also apply to customers with older tariffs who did not previously have this contract component. Depending on the tariff level, this means between one and 10 gigabytes extra per billing month, every twelve months. As a rule of thumb, the smaller tariffs ("S") will increase by one gigabyte per year, the medium tariffs ("M") by 5 gigabytes and the larger tariffs ("L" or "XL") by 10 gigabytes.

TelefĂłnica Deutschland had a total of around 28 million contract customers at the end of the last quarter. Around eleven million of these still have a contract with 1&1 and will be gradually transferred to the new competitor's network. Of the approximately 17 million O2 contract customers, a significant proportion still have older tariffs without a "Grow" component.

These O2 customers are to be converted – The company is not revealing exactly how many. However, it is several million, says private customer board member Andreas Laukenmann in an interview with heise online. They are to be switched over by mid-2025. The additional gigabytes for the monthly data volume add up to "six billion gigabytes over the next five years" – - that's almost six exabytes.

Customers will receive an addition to their current contract. Otherwise, nothing will change, the provider assures: The price, details and term of the contracts remain unaffected. "This is a no-holds-barred offer," promises Laukenmann. Customers don't have to wait a year, either; the first additional gigabytes will be added to the included volume of their contracts immediately.

O2 first introduced the "Grow" benefit in 2022 as a promotional tariff to mark the brand's 20th anniversary. After the tariff was well received by customers, the network operator initially extended the offer and then permanently incorporated the "Grow" component into its contract portfolio the following year. Other network operators have since integrated similar mechanisms into their tariff portfolios.

With the Grow benefit for all contract customers, TelefĂłnica Deutschland wants to position itself as a particularly customer-friendly provider. "We would like to thank our existing O2 customers for their trust and loyalty by automatically adding the Grow advantage free of charge," says Laukenmann. Existing customers should experience the same appreciation as new customers.

In addition to the "Grow advantage", Telefónica Deutschland is also promoting its separate smartphone financing as customer-friendly. Customers who buy their smartphone from O2 in installments pay for it via a separate contract within 24 months from – instead of having to endure higher fees for the entire term of the mobile phone contract. But it will not stop there: Laukenmann has two more surprises in store for 2025.
