Shortly after the hearing on "Open Source" in the Digital Committee, the IT industry association Bitkom publishes a survey on concerns about dependence on the USA. Both the experts and the companies surveyed by Bitkom agree that they want to become independent of the USA. According to the survey, 79% of the 329 tech companies surveyed believe that trust in the United States has been "weakened or destroyed" as a result of the latest election results.
78% also fear that Donald Trump's victory will also have a negative impact on the German economy. While 24% expect positive effects on their company according to the Bitkom survey, 36% fear negative effects. A majority of 92% call for Germany to become more independent from the USA. Likewise, 86% of respondents are calling for more European hyperscalers.
"Germany must become stronger, more resilient and more opportunity-oriented. To achieve this, we need to become more technologically and economically independent. Our digital sovereignty is crucial to whether we will still be perceived as a strong player on an international level in the future and whether we will be able to act," says Bitkom President Dr. Ralf Wintergerst.

Europe lags far behind the USA or China in terms of data center performance, as a recently published Bitkom study shows. "In the USA, two to three times as much data center capacity is added every year as is installed in Germany," says Wintergerst. According to the Bitkom survey, 80 percent of digital companies are of the opinion that Germany and Europe could be left behind by the USA. Only 16 percent consider the USA to be a reliable partner.
