HDMI 2.2 arrives in January and requires new cables

HDMI 2.1 gets a faster successor. The GeForce RTX 5000 and Radeon RX 8000 are likely to run out of time.

Eight years after the announcement of HDMI 2.1, the successor version 2.2 follows. The HDMI Forum as the responsible party for the specification and the HDMI Licensing Administrator, Inc. as the licensor invite you to a press conference at the CES 2025 electronics trade fair. It states:

"The HDMI Forum will be announcing a new HDMI Specification release. The new specification, with next-gen HDMI(R) Technology and higher bandwidth, enables a wide range of higher resolutions and refresh rates and will be supported with a new HDMI Cable. New technology enables higher quality options now and in the future for content producers such as TV, movie and game studios, while enabling multiple distribution platforms"

HDMI 2.2 is explicitly mentioned in the footnotes. The press conference will take place on January 6, 2025 at 7 p.m. German time. The speakers will be the heads of the two HDMI organizations, Chandlee Harrell and Rob Tobias.

Some websites speculate that Nvidia's next generation of graphics cards, the GeForce RTX 5000 and AMD's Radeon RX 8000, could already support HDMI 2.2. Both series are likely to be announced on the same day or the following night. However, HDMI 2.2 support in this generation does not seem particularly likely if the HDMI forum did not share the specification with the manufacturers years ago.

For context: The HDMI Forum announced version 2.1 at CES in January 2017. The first graphics cards with it appeared late in 2020 in the form of Nvidia's GeForce RTX 3000 and AMD's Radeon RX 6000. Other devices such as televisions and AV receivers were also a long time coming.

HDMI 2.1 transmits a maximum of 48 gigabits per second. This is not quite enough for 4K resolution (3840 × 2160 pixels) with 240 hertz without compression (calculated 55 Gbit/s with 8 bits per color channel, 69 Gbit/s with 10 bits). Displayport 2.1 achieves 80 Gbit/s in its fastest operating mode, but is largely limited to PC monitors.

It is not yet known how fast HDMI 2.2 will be. However, the new cables required suggest major changes.
