Behringer has released firmware 2.0 for the popular ProVSMini mini synthesizer, which is designed to capture the spirit of the Sequential Circuits Prophet VS vector synth. And it packs quite a punch, tickling the little one's hardware reserves.
The increase in the number of voices from four to five stands out. The increased polyphony allows you to play more complex chords or simply create denser soundscapes. The arpeggiator has been given a hold function in the ARP menu. This means that it continues to play even if the keys have already been released. There is now also a chord mode, which breaks up individually pressed keys with selectable harmonies – major, minor, octave and more. Behringer would like to point out that both functions are deactivated in sequencer mode.
Numerous new and useful effects
A portamento effect can be activated in the Oscillator menu, which adjusts the pitch of successive notes "smoothly". The "FX Engine" has been added to the system menu. Previously, there was only a chorus effect on board, adjustable with two rotary knobs. This can now be switched to Reverb and Ensemble to create new sounds. Speaking of sound – this should be significantly better thanks to a revision of the DCA model; Behringer explains that this results in extended dynamic control and smoother sound transitions.

The firmware update 2.0 also includes a new set of presets. To activate them, ProVSMini owners must perform a firmware reset in the system menu. The original presets will be lost. However, they can be downloaded again from the Behringer download page. The files for the ProVSMini can be found by selecting "Synthesizers and Keyboards" – "Keyboard Synthesizers" – "Hybrid Synthesizers" – "Pro VS Mini". With the Synthtribe software for macOS and Windows offered there, the firmware update can be transferred to the ProVSMini.
Not only Behringer, but also Arturia provided its customers with significant firmware updates shortly before Christmas. Firmware 3.0 for the Arturia MiniFreak brings the synthesizer a sample engine and granular synthesis based on it. This creates new, far-reaching possibilities in sound design.
