At the start of CES 2025 (January 7 to 10) next week, the tech industry – and not just – will meet in Las Vegas. As usual, the trade fair is the first highlight of the year. In addition to numerous innovations in the field of consumer electronics, the focus will be on new hardware for artificial intelligence (AI) and the automotive industry, which has long been a fixture at CES. Other topics include digital health and energy supply technologies.
The keynote speech by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang on the eve of the official opening of CES on Tuesday morning (Las Vegas local time) is eagerly awaited. As last year, AI is one of the central themes of the trade fair. This will also be the focus for Nvidia, but new gaming graphics cards from the GeForce series can also be expected. Other chip manufacturers such as AMD, Intel and Qualcomm will also be presenting new products at CES.
Broad spectrum
The fact that CES now covers a very diverse range of technology can also be seen from the keynote speakers. In addition to Jensen Huang, Delta CEO Ed Bastian (whose airline suffered a massive IT outage in 2024), Panasonic CEO Yuki Kusum, Volvo CEO Martin Lundstedt and X CEO Linda Yaccarino are expected to make appearances. The current Federal Minister for Digital Affairs, Volker Wissing (now independent), will also be making his rounds of the trade fair again. A number of celebrities have also announced their attendance – and those who want to be.
CES was originally the trade fair for consumer electronics: television and audio. While TV manufacturers are still showing their new products for the year here, the audio industry is on the retreat. There will also be news on AV standards: The HDMI Forum has already announced that it will be bringing the new HDMI 2.2 standard to CES. And Google subsidiary YouTube is trying to establish the Eclipsa Audio surround sound format together with Samsung.

Notebook manufacturers such as Asus and Lenovo are bringing their new device portfolios to Las Vegas, and there is speculation on social media that the prototype of a notebook with a rollable display shown by Lenovo at MWC 2023 could go into series production. New monitors are also expected. In addition to new GPUs, gamers can also look forward to 4K–OLEDs with high frame rates. There are also growing indications that Lenovo and Valve will present a handheld console with SteamOS. Atari and My Arcade will also present a new handheld, but one for retro games from the classic Atari consoles and arcade titles.

Last year, the AI gadget "Rabbit r1 " received a lot of attention at CES without being exhibited at the trade fair itself. The hype quickly gave way to disillusionment for other AI toys presented over the course of the year. CES 2025 will provide clues as to whether the second generation of AI gadgets has more to offer. In any case, it will be hard to escape the topic of AI at the trade fair – whether it is in consumer electronics, household appliances or the smart home.
In addition to the usual appliance categories, the CES always comes up with unusual gadgets and technical gimmicks that don't always succeed on the market. In the past, brewing machines, Carrera tracks and cute little AI robots have proved to be big hits with the public. LG is coming up with one such gimmick this year: The South Korean manufacturer is showcasing a lamp that is a Bluetooth speaker and a 4K projector.

Cars and AI
Last but not least, car manufacturers are also focusing on AI, which has long since become a permanent fixture at the trade fair. BMW is working on new display technology and software for the interior. Honda is expected to provide updates on the "Honda 0" platform, which was presented for the first time at CES 2024, as well as the cooperation with Sony. And suppliers such as Bosch and Continental are keen to showcase their latest developments at CES, which will then go into series production a few years later.
Although the organizer, the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), does not want to make any forecasts, it is expected that around 140,000 visitors will attend. In 2024, CES had just under 139,000 visitors and is thus slowly approaching the level of the years before the coronavirus pandemic, when up to 185,000 visitors came to Las Vegas. However, CES veterans also appreciate it when it is not quite so crowded.
The trade fair will officially open on Tuesday morning (local time) with the keynote speech by Panasonic CEO Yuki Kusum. There will be numerous events for trade visitors and the media beforehand.
