Attack in New Orleans: Crime scene scouted in advance with smart glasses
The man who drove a car into partying people in New Orleans on New Year's Eve was wearing smart glasses. He used them to film the street in advance.

The assassin of New Orleans visited the later crime scene several times in advance and filmed at least once with smart glasses from Meta. The FBI has announced this and published recordings that the man made with them. They show from the perspective of his eyes how he moves through the entertainment district of New Orleans on his bicycle. The US Federal Police point out that the glasses resemble conventional glasses, so third parties were probably unable to recognize that he was recording. When the man then drove a pick-up truck into the partying people on Bourbon Street on New Year's Eve, he was also wearing meta glasses: "But he did not activate the glasses to broadcast his actions live on the internet."

Inconspicuous recording function
As a result of the attack, 14 people lost their lives in the early hours of New Year's Day. The perpetrator himself died in a gun battle with the police. The man had rented the vehicle beforehand and had also planted explosive charges in two coolers on Bourbon Street immediately before the attack. However, neither exploded. Investigators have now also reported that the supporter of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist militia had traveled to Egypt and Canada before the attack. However, it is still unclear whether the trips were connected to the attack. Acting US President Joe Biden is expected in New Orleans on Monday, where he plans to speak with relatives of the victims, among others.

The fact that the assassin used Meta smart glasses to prepare for the attack was discovered during searches carried out at his home and workplace, among other places. The current generation of Ray-Ban Meta Glasses was launched in the fall of 2023. Their core function is the hands-free recording of photos and videos. The latter can be streamed directly to Facebook or Instagram. Outsiders are informed via an LED display when the recording function is active. The glasses can also provide information via a bone-sound loudspeaker. In the video now distributed by the FBI, the assassin can also be seen filming himself in the mirror with the glasses.
