Augmented reality (AR) is becoming increasingly popular in Germany, with more than a quarter (28%) using at least one AR application – compared to 19% in 2023. This is the result of a survey of more than 1,000 respondents conducted by the digital association Bitkom. According to the survey, AR is particularly popular among 16 to 29-year-olds and 30 to 49-year-olds, around 40% of whom use the technology.
According to the survey, just under half (49%) are certain that AR will be an integral part of everyday life in ten years' time. Currently, AR is mainly used for camera filters and games. 15 percent use filters from Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and similar apps to give themselves an accessory, for example. For games such as Pokémon Go, Jurassic World Alive or Ingress, 13% use AR.
However, other AR options are hardly used, for example when shopping online to try something on virtually. However, it is also possible to determine a person's measurements, for example. So far, however, only four percent make use of such possibilities or use AR in museums, exhibitions or at trade fairs. A further four percent use AR with a navigation app. Three percent use measuring tape apps with AR, while even fewer (2 percent) use camera filters to display buildings in cities that no longer exist.

“AR is already regularly used in operational contexts such as training and remote maintenance. With the increasing variety of possible uses and integration into existing applications, the technology is also gaining importance in private use – and is developing far beyond its initial focus on entertainment,” says Dr. Sebastian Klöß, expert for consumer technology at Bitkom. “Unlike in companies, AR is now used almost exclusively with smartphones and tablets in the private sphere,” explains Klöß. However, half of Germans (46%) are open to AR glasses. According to the survey, 16 percent would want to wear smart contact lenses.
