Many bikes without a motor weigh more: Urtopia is presenting a superlative e-bike at the CES in Las Vegas. The Titanium Zero weighs just 10 kg including battery and motor. Nevertheless, the mini mid-mounted motor drives with a maximum force of 65 Nm. The catch is that it is only a prototype. However, some of the know-how could flow into the manufacturer's future e-bikes.

Only a handful: The engine of the Urtopia concept bike hardly adds any weight to the frame.

The company has invested around 1 million US dollars in the development of the e-bike, says Urtopia CEO Bo Zhang. He estimates the value of the bike's components at 50,000 US dollars. The titanium frame of the racing bike comes from a 3D printer. The self-developed motor is barely visible in the bottom bracket, is called Quark DM 1.2 and weighs 1.2 kg. The battery hidden in the frame is said to score points with its high energy density, compact size and low weight. Urtopia speaks of 300 Wh/kg, without mentioning the total capacity of the battery or the maximum range that the prototype would achieve with it. The gears are an electronic 12-speed derailleur system from SRAM. Although the Urtopia Titanium Zero is purely a prototype with no prospect of series production, the know-how gained from the project will be incorporated into the manufacturer's future series bikes.

The manufacturer's plans are much more concrete elsewhere: Urtopia has presented a folding bike with a carbon frame for the North American market. The Carbon Fold 1 stands on 18-inch wheels and is powered by a rear hub motor. It is unclear whether the bike will also come to Germany. However, the manufacturer is already active in this country. The Urtopia Carbon 1 turned out to have all kinds of smart features in the test. We didn't test its successor, the Fusion, because the manufacturer sent us a test bike that was better equipped than the standard model.
