Raspberry Pi 5 with 16 gigabytes of RAM presented
The Raspberry Pi 5 is now also available with 16 GB RAM, in addition to the versions with 2, 4 or 8 GB. However, the surcharge is somewhat high.

When the Raspberry Pi 4 was launched in 2019, the Raspi developers already stated that a version with 16 gigabytes of RAM would be feasible in principle. But this is only coming now, only with the Raspberry Pi 5 and expensive: the list price is 120 US dollars, which is estimated to be 130 to 135 euros in Germany.
This makes the 16 GByte version of the Raspi 5 around 45 euros pricier than the 8 GByte version (88 euros).
For comparison: A memory bar with 8 GB DDR4 RAM costs less than 20 euros. The models with 2 or 4 GB are currently available from 55 and 65 euros respectively.

ARM SoC in stepping D0
The Raspberry Pi 5 with 16 GByte LPDDR4-4267 RAM is equipped with the D0 version (stepping) of the ARM SoC Broadcom BCM2712, which debuted on the 2 GByte version presented in August 2024. It is also used on the Compute Module 5 (CM5) and in the Raspberry Pi 500 and is slightly more economical in idle mode than the older stepping C1.
In the short test, the Raspberry Pi 5 with 16 GB RAM consumed around 0.4 watts more power in idle mode than the other versions with BCM2712 D0, namely 2.95 watts instead of around 2.5 watts. The Raspi 5 with the older chip requires around 3.4 watts. Under full load, the maximum is just under 9 watts for all CPU steppings.
In benchmarks such as openSSL, 7-zip, Geekbench 6 and JetStream 2.2, we found no differences in computing power compared to Raspi 5 versions with less RAM. The huge RAM is only useful for certain applications, for example for virtualizing multiple operating systems or running numerous (Docker) containers.
