Since the beginning of 2025, payments with Google Wallet and Google Pay have not been possible if a PayPal account was registered for this purpose. The payment service provider has now announced that it has fixed the problem.

At the request of heise onlines, Paypal announced the following on Wednesday evening: "In the past few days, some of our customers in Germany may have experienced problems when paying with PayPal via Google Pay on mobile devices. This technical problem has now been resolved and our services are available again without restrictions. We apologize for any inconvenience caused."

Paypal is not commenting on what caused the payments to be rejected and how the problem was corrected. Apparently, it is not necessary for customers to take any further action, such as changing their settings.

Contrary to what Paypal claims, however, it was not just "some" customers who were affected, but many, as has also been shown in internet forums. As banks have to work directly with Google so that their cards can be used in Google Pay and Google Wallet, and only a few German banks do this, many use the option of depositing their PayPal account. This provides an easy way to pay with both a smartphone and a smartwatch, as there are hardly any dedicated payment apps from banks for smartwatches. Customers of savings banks, for example, can make use of this option.

Google has not yet provided any information on the problem, even after repeated requests. Should the company subsequently provide information on the causes and solution, we will update this report accordingly. Paypal has been available as a payment method in Google Wallet since the end of 2018.
