The open-source media player VLC is to receive a function with which AI-generated subtitles and translations can be generated locally on the device. This was announced by VideoLAN, the non-profit company that publishes VLC, at the CES in Las Vegas and online. At the same time, it was announced that VLC has now been downloaded six billion times. The number of active users is also growing.
The fact that subtitles will be generated and translated locally on the device using open source LLMs in future means that there is no need for an internet connection and the use of a cloud service, explained VideoLAN at the presentation of the new function. However, it has not yet been announced when this will be released. The whole thing is to take place in real time.
Many detailed questions still unanswered
VideoLAN started in 1996 as a student project in Paris. The VLC video player is available for various operating systems and is offered free of charge and ad-free.

The developers of VLC have announced that they will shortly be publishing a blog post that will provide further information about the new subtitle function. Among other things, it remains to be seen which languages will be supported and what system requirements a computer must have to operate the AI locally. Pictures from the trade fair stand show that subtitles can be translated into German, Hebrew, Japanese and French, among others.
