2025 should be an interesting year, despite all the election campaign bluster. The figure is also extremely interesting from a mathematical point of view.
Oops, flash! No sooner have we landed in the year 2025 than the parties have gathered to contest the next election. The first posters appeared overnight this weekend, and the election notifications are on their way. It helps to take a look at the year 2025 with a little distance because events with remarkable numbers are coming up all over the world that are just as interesting as the number 2025 itself.
The English-speaking nerds already made a discovery at the turn of the year when they looked at the calendar: the year started on a Wednesday. In English, the year began with “Wednesday”, “Thursday”, “Friday” — or in short: WTF. This special start to the year previously existed in 1997, 2003, 2014 and – you guessed it – in 2020.

Big Hindu festival
2025 also offers all kinds of cultural highlights. Let's start with the Hindu festival Kumbh Mela in India, a festival that UNESCO has included in the Intangible World Heritage List. This year it will be celebrated as “Maha Kumbh Mela”. Such a big Kumbh Mela with the special constellation of the sun, moon, and Jupiter can only be celebrated every 144 years. The authorities expect up to 400 million devotees to make a pilgrimage to Prayagraj in the state of Uttar Pradesh, where the event will be celebrated for 45 days from February 23 over an area of 40 square kilometers. The last regular Kumbh Mela made headlines in April 2021 because it was held without restrictions in the Covid-19 wave and up to 400,000 infections were reported per day.
In our cultural hemisphere, there is also an important religious event that took place 1700 years ago: in May 325, 318 bishops met at the Council of Nicaea to clarify the position of Jesus in the Christian faith. Were the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit three separate beings? Originally, an ecumenical service of all Orthodox churches and the Roman Christian churches was planned, but as of January 2025, it is unclear what will take place.

This brings us a little closer to German history, as the Anabaptist movement began to take shape with the first baptism of an adult in Zurich on January 21, 1525. This variant of rebellious Christianity is celebrated throughout the year under the motto “Daring!”.
From there, it is not far to Thomas Müntzer's social-revolutionary interpretation and the beginning of the Peasants' War, when the common man and woman demanded “Gerechtigkeyt! We should not forget the mood of the time, in which the end of the world was expected in 1524.

Such numerical mysticism is repugnant to some enlightened people, but there is still the wonderful world of mathematics. 2025 is the square of 45, a year that was last seen in 1936 and will not be seen again until 2116. 2025 has the sum of 9 in common with the number 45. 45 can also be understood as the sum of all numbers from 1 to 9, which leads to the notation (1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9)²=2025. The year before 2025 would therefore be 1296, the following year 3025. The film Red Planet , which was released in 2000, was intended to show how humanity survives. 2025 dystopia with an authoritarian US president
Fans of cultivated dystopia should refer to the “Parable of the Sower” by black science fiction author Octavia Butler, which was first published 32 years ago. In the book, a radical, authoritarian president comes to power in the USA in 2025, abolishing all labor protection laws and forcing workers into cities owned by companies. The whole thing is told from the diary viewpoint of a young woman who eventually sets out to find an alternative to the disaster and founds a religion in the process. Well. Let's hope no one takes this as a guide to government action.
This brings us to a look into the future because in 2025 it is only 500 years until the year 2525, when the beautiful song by Zager & Evans begins. It was originally called Exordium & Terminus, but then became a hit under the title “In the Year 2525”. The German translation sums it up: “In the year 2525, if humanity survives until then at all, it will hopefully be smarter.”
