CarPlay 2.0: Leaked widgets as a sign of life
New leaked screen views show that Apple may be planning widgets in CarPlay. They were found in an EU database.

The first car models with next-generation CarPlay were actually due to be presented in 2024. As is well known, this did not come to pass, but the new CarPlay has apparently not been written off either. This is indicated by new leaked screen views found in an EU database and attributed to the next CarPlay generation by the person who published them on X.
The images show how users will presumably be able to choose from various widgets in CarPlay 2.0 in the future. These are identical in appearance to the widgets familiar from the iPhone. The details show a clock widget that allows users to display the time in a specific city, a weather widget with the forecast for a specific location and a calendar widget that highlights the next appointment. There is also a combined widget for navigation and media player as well as a widget that shows what is currently playing.
Widgets perhaps also in CarPlay 1.0?
At the end of November, various depictions of new CarPlay elements were discovered in the design protection database of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). These indicated the integration of car manufacturer logos and how Apple plans to use the elements for vehicle control. The Apple website for next-generation CarPlay still states that the first vehicle models will be available in 2024. At the end of 2023, Porsche and Aston Martin were named as the first manufacturers to integrate CarPlay 2.0. The concept goes far beyond the infotainment system, which is currently covered by CarPlay 1.0, and is also intended to connect elements for controlling the vehicle systems and displays with an iPhone.

It is not clear whether Apple is only planning to integrate the widgets in CarPlay 2.0 or whether the possible leak may even provide information about an upcoming update for users of the first CarPlay generation. An extension of the widgets to CarPlay would at least be logical after Apple first rolled out a kind of overarching concept on the iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch. The images shown now at least do not presuppose any connection to the car beyond the current CarPlay.
