OpenShift is actually a Kubernetes distribution from Red Hat that is capable of managing virtual machines in addition to operating containers. With the Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization Engine, the open-source specialist has now introduced an OpenShift version that only provides the virtualization functions of OpenShift. By dispensing with container functions, the scope, and complexity of the platform are reduced.

Red Hat is thus responding to the changes in the virtualization market resulting from the takeover of market leader VMware by Broadcom last year. Broadcom had introduced new license models, which led to additional costs for many VMware customers – and triggered a high willingness to switch to other platforms.
Migration help available
Red Hat helps with the migration of virtual machines from other environments with its Migration Toolkit for Virtualization. It also provides instructions for migrating from vSphere to Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization.
In this workshop, you will learn efficient strategies for a migration that is as painless and failure-free as possible and carry out the migration yourself in a laboratory during the training. In addition to this practical part, you will learn how to plan a migration and receive valuable starting points for a successful and smooth migration. The workshop will take place online, further information and tickets are available at heise.de/s/Ndll0.
Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization Engine uses the Liux hypervisor KVM and runs virtual Linux and Windows machines. The software runs on on-prem servers in your data center as well as on bare-metal services in the cloud, such as the bare-metal instances of AWS.
