CapCut from Bytedance has been banned from the app stores in the USA. Meta sees this as an opportunity to launch its own video editing app for smartphones.

Meta has announced a new mobile video editing app called Edits, which will be released first for iOS and later for Android. The program, which is specifically tailored to the needs of videos for social networks, is apparently a reaction to the fact that the popular CapCut app is no longer available in the Apple and Google app stores in the USA following the banning of ByteDance apps.

Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri explained on the social network Threads that Edits is not just an app, but a whole range of "creative tools". For example, there is a tab where creators can find inspiration, a function for writing down ideas at an early stage and a camera function for filming videos, which enables recordings of up to 10 minutes. Users can share edited videos as drafts with friends and other creators. Anyone who shares their video on Instagram can also view the statistics from the meta-network directly in the app. Exports to Instagram should be possible in 1080p resolution.

According to the app store description, other functions include AI animations, the option to change the background using a green screen and functions to improve the sound. Particularly important for social videos: Subtitles can be generated automatically and customized in the app according to your own needs. Exported videos should not contain a watermark so that they can also be easily used for other platforms.

Interested parties can already pre-register for the download in the Apple App Store. It will be available from March 13th and can then apparently also be downloaded in Europe. Meta is working with selected video makers to further improve the app and receive feedback, says Mosseri.

CapCut had to be removed from the App Store and Google Play in the USA by Apple and Google alongside TikTok, Lark and other apps. The reason for this is a law that has come into force to protect the USA from the influence of China.
