Raspberry Pi 5: First dual SSD adapter with PCIe 3.0
Seeed Studio solders a PCIe 3.0 switch to a Raspi 5 adapter. It enables the use of two fast SSDs or the combination of SSD and AI unit.

An adapter makes the Raspberry Pi 5 ready for two M.2 cards with PCI Express 3.0. Seeed Studio relies on Asmedia's PCIe 3.0 switch ASM2806 for this. It is connected via the single PCIe lane of the Raspi 5 processor and divides the almost 2 GByte/s bandwidth between two M.2 slots.
This allows two PCIe 3.0 SSDs to be installed or alternatively an SSD together with an M.2 AI accelerator such as the Hailo 8L.
Officially, the Raspi 5 is only certified for PCI Express 2.0, but unofficially the single-board computer can also handle PCIe 3.0 speeds. The PCIe switch divides the available bandwidth between two SSDs: If the data is only required on one data carrier, it can use the entire almost 2 GByte/s. When accessing both SSDs simultaneously, they share the 2 GByte/s.
Previously only with PCIe 2.0 switch
PCI Express 3.0 previously only worked on the Raspi 5 with HAT adapters (hardware attached on top), which provide a single M2 slot and do without a PCIe switch. Until now, multi-adapters have used PCIe switches that can only handle 2.0 speeds, such as Asmedia's ASM1182e for dual adapters and ASM1184e for quad adapters. SSDs are only half as fast.

Seeed Studio sells the "PCIe 3.0 switch to dual M.2 HAT" via its own online store for just under 45 euros. It is shipped from China. Typically, 19 percent import sales tax is payable on imports. CNX Software drew attention to the new product. With the adapter, the Raspi 5 no longer fits into the official housing. Seeed Studio provides the data for its own 3D-printed housing in the wiki.
Some German retailers such as Berrybase and Galaxus import individual Seeed Studio products, but do not yet have the adapter in their range. Some products in this country trade under the name Seeed Technology.
