Ryzen 7 9800X3D more available, but still too expensive
The fastest processor for PC games is finally widely available again and no longer has fantasy prices. But its predecessor does.
The 9800X3D is still the most popular processor in price comparisons.

After AMD's Ryzen 9800X3 had been virtually sold out and heavily overpriced since the beginning of December 2024, the situation has improved six weeks later. Even crazy prices are no longer being charged: while the CPU cost a whopping 750 euros at the turn of the year, it is now available from around 580 euros. Although this is still well above AMD's recommended retail price of 529 euros, it is still within the usual availability surcharge that hardware vendors usually charge.
Things are looking better now: All major German mail order companies list the processor (starting from 435,22 €) as available immediately or within a few days. This was also different in December, when the CPU was only offered as a pre-order at times, until some retailers temporarily removed it from the range altogether. The 9800X3D was sold out especially after the slightly cheaper Black Friday offers, as well as directly after Christmas. Apparently, the shortages were so drastic that even counterfeiters tried to sell relabeled older Ryzens as 9800X3D.
The price development of this CPU is also closely linked to that of its predecessor, the 7800X3D, probably because many users buy these processors, which also fit into the AM5 socket, as an alternative to the overpriced 9800X3D. After the older chip was over 550 euros in December, it is currently available again for around 490 euros. However, it is still not a recommended price; in summer 2024, the 7800X3D was already available for around 330 euros. All prices mentioned refer to the boxed versions with AMD warranty, not to tray goods, for which only the seller is liable in case of doubt.

AMD's X3D processors are particularly popular with PC gamers because they often deliver better performance in the form of more frames per second with such software than even more expensive CPUs with more cores. Unlike some media editing software, many games benefit from more memory bandwidth, not more cores. With 96 MByte L3 cache each (64 of which are implemented as X3D stacks), the 7800X3D and 9800X3D intercept many accesses to the comparatively very slow main memory.
