The software company JetBrains has updated its Data Playground, an interactive dashboard on the global developer landscape, with a new methodology and current data from 2024. The IT salary calculator is now outsourced and offers an insight into how much developers earn in different countries.
IT salaries in 15 countries
After selecting a programming language and country, the salary calculator shows a salary range of annual gross salaries (in US dollars, including bonuses) in 2024. The salaries are broken down by years of programming experience. The data is based on the JetBrains State of Developer Ecosystem Survey 2024, in which over 23,000 developers worldwide took part.
The 15 countries that can be selected in the salary calculator include the USA, the United Kingdom, India, France and Germany. The programming languages available for selection are
- C/C++
- C#
- Go
- HTML/CSS
- Java/Kotlin
- JavaScript/TypeScript
- PHP
- Python
- Rust
- SQL (PL/SQL, T-SQL or other programming extensions of SQL)
- Shell scripting languages (Bash, Shell, PowerShell etc.)
Experienced JavaScript/TypeScript developers are ahead in Germany
The salary scale in Germany is led by JavaScript/TypeScript developers with over 16 years of coding experience: They earn up to 223,000 US dollars per year. However, this is apparently an outlier, as the salary range with this level of experience is enormous and starts at 43,000 US dollars. For comparison: In the USA, up to 450,000 US dollars can be achieved under these conditions – which is also possible there with 11-16 years of experience.

Even with less experience, there are clear differences between the lowest and highest salaries. For example, JavaScript/TypeScript developers in Germany with 6 to 10 years of programming experience earn between 35,000 and 150,000 US dollars. For other programming languages, the picture is similarly diverse, with Java/Kotlin, for example, ranging from 41,000 to 134,000 US dollars for 6 to 10 years of experience.

It should be noted that the years of experience refer to the total time of professional programming – not to the selected programming language.
