The humanoid robot HMND 01 is intended to work in industry. However, the developers want to make it modular.

The relatively young British robotics start-up Humanoid has demonstrated its first humanoid robot in a video. Although the robot itself is not particularly spectacular, it is one of the first humanoid robots to be developed in Europe.

The HMND 01 robot is 1.75 m tall and weighs 70 kg. Humanoid hides the mechanics under a smock-like garment and fabric trousers. This makes it possible to equip individual robots with the appropriate (safety) clothing for the desired application. The different colors also make it easier to distinguish the robots from one another. In any case, the type of clothing is a welcome change from the usual monotony in the field of humanoid robots.

In its current iteration, the robot is expected to reach a walking speed of 1.5 m/s (around 5.4 km/h). The robot cannot run any faster. The two-part battery should be able to last around four hours. It is housed in the back and is replaceable.

Like most humanoid robots, the HMND 01 will initially be used in industry. It can lift payloads of up to 15 kg. Its entire body has 41 degrees of freedom. It has hands with five fingers that are modeled on those of humans. The hands are apparently interchangeable so that they can also be replaced with simpler (and cheaper) models.

The robot is designed to be modular. This gives customers the option of choosing between different upper and lower bodies as well as end effector configurations. This should make it easier to adapt the robot to different tasks. It should also reduce costs.

Humanoid is talking about developing the HMND 01 as a robot that works collaboratively with humans. "At Humanoid, our team believes in a future where humans and machines work side by side, not in competition but in harmony," says Artem Sokolov, founder of Humanoid. "This societal shift will address social issues such as labor shortages and an aging population, while giving people more freedom to focus on more creative and meaningful work. The strongest argument for humanoids is that the world is already designed for humans, so they can integrate seamlessly and adapt quickly to existing environments."

To this end, Sokolov has put together a team of experienced engineers from the fields of robotics, AI and industrial design to develop an intelligent and adaptable robot. The aim is for HMND 01 to be able to perform complex manipulations at a comparable or higher level than a human.

However, the company, which was founded in 2024, is still in the early stages of developing HMND 01. An alpha prototype, which can move on legs or wheels, is to be completed in 2025. This will be followed by an extensive test phase. The company is also already in talks with retailers with a view to carrying out pilot projects with them at a later date.
