Zeiss has announced two new fixed focal lengths for mirrorless full-frame cameras. The Otus ML 1.4/50 and Otus ML 1.4/85 lenses are designed to offer first-class imaging performance, as Zeiss writes in a press release. They thus follow in the tradition of their SLR predecessors. Zeiss also focused on uncompromising imaging performance with these lenses. This had and still has its price, and Zeiss continues to do without autofocus. The new lenses will be available for full-frame cameras with Canon RF mount, Nikon Z mount and Sony E mount.
The focus ring can be de-clicked so that the lenses can also show their strengths in video recordings. This is not done via a switch, but must be done with a special tool on the bayonet.
Otus ML 1.4/50: Compact normal lens with high speed
The Zeiss Otus ML 1.4/50 is a fast normal lens for mirrorless full-frame cameras. According to Zeiss, it offers high detail resolution, natural detail and a soft bokeh effect. The lens consists of 14 lenses in eleven groups and has an aperture with ten blades for a soft bokeh.
According to Zeiss, the Otus ML 1.4/50 is compact and lightweight despite its high speed. It measures 87 mm in length and weighs around 700 grams. The lens is available immediately for the Sony E-mount and Leica M-mount and costs 2500 euros.

Otus series from Zeiss
When they were launched in 2013, the Otus lenses from Zeiss were regarded as the reference in terms of imaging performance and were aimed at professional photographers and demanding enthusiasts, both then and now. According to Zeiss, the new Otus ML lenses also offer first-class image quality without compromise.
“The Otus ML lenses set new standards in terms of resolution, contrast and bokeh,” says Björn Pankratz, Product Manager for Lenses at Zeiss. “They are the perfect choice for demanding photographers who want to get the best out of their mirrorless full-frame cameras.”

With the new Otus ML lenses, Zeiss is getting back into the high-quality fixed focal length business. Although the lenses promise first-class imaging performance, they are also correspondingly expensive. For professional photographers and demanding enthusiasts who value uncompromising image quality, the Otus ML lenses could nevertheless be an interesting option. Amateur photographers are likely to be put off by the price and lack of autofocus, especially as the camera manufacturers themselves also offer high-quality fixed focal lengths.
