Microsoft recommends young processors to PC manufacturers for Windows 11 24H2

A support list for Windows 11 24H2 removes further processors. However, nothing should change for users.

In the last two weeks, there have been increasing reports that Microsoft is further restricting hardware support with the 24H2 update for Windows 11. However, this is primarily a recommendation for manufacturers of desktop PCs and notebooks to use newer processors.

In the case of Intel systems, manufacturers should only pre-install Windows 11 24H2 if a CPU from the 11th Core i generation is installed. Microsoft has already confirmed to the Windows Latest website that the system requirements for private users will not change.

Anyone with a Core i-8000, -9000 or -10000 will therefore continue to receive Windows 11 updates, including 24H2. Anyone who buys a complete PC or notebook with such an older processor can install 24H2 later via a Windows update.

It is not known why Microsoft no longer wants manufacturers to pre-install the current version on older PCs. However, these are hardly ever produced any more anyway. It is primarily about devices that are already on sale. We have asked Intel for a statement and will update this report as soon as one is available.

Meanwhile, there are no obvious changes at AMD. Microsoft continues to name the Ryzen 2000 as the minimum requirement for Windows 11 24H2. The age discrepancy is interesting: models such as the Ryzen 7 2700X were released in April 2018, while Intel's Core i-11000 processors were initially released in early 2021.

A look at the list for Qualcomm processors also shows that Microsoft's support documents are currently only of limited help. All current Snapdragon X CPUs from 2024 are missing, although they are, of course, released for Windows 11, including 24H2.
