Sony is presenting two new lenses at the CP+ photo fair in Japan. The FE 16 mm F1.8 G and FE 400-800 mm F6.3-8 G OSS models expand the range of E-mount full-frame lenses. Both promise high-resolution and special properties for different photographic requirements.
FE 16 mm F1.8 G: Compact ultra-wide-angle lens

The FE 16 mm F1.8 G is an ultra-wide-angle lens with a maximum aperture of f/1.8. It offers high resolution and an appealing bokeh, which is supported by a circular aperture with eleven blades. Two Advanced Aspherical (AA) lenses minimize distortion and astigmatism. A Super ED glass element and three ED elements reduce chromatic aberrations. Sony uses a total of 15 lenses in twelve groups. These features make the lens ideal for dynamic wide-angle shots. The combination of a large open aperture and a close focusing distance of 15 centimetres enables creative perspectives.
The lens is compact and lightweight, with a weight of 304 grams and dimensions of 73.8 mm Ă— 75 mm. It is equipped with a fast and precise autofocus, which is driven by two XD linear motors. These motors are designed to ensure quiet and low-vibration focusing.
For video recordings, the lens offers a reduced focus breathing function with compatible cameras, which should enable smooth recordings. The click function of the aperture ring can be deactivated via an aperture lock switch.
The lens is compatible with 67 mm standard filters and can be easily balanced on a gimbal. Sealed against dust and splash water, the wide-angle lens is ready for use even under adverse conditions. The focus hold button can be assigned various functions via the camera.
FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS: Super telephoto zoom

The FE 400-800 mm F6.3-8 G OSS is the first G lens from Sony with a super telephoto zoom range of 800 millimeters. It offers high resolution over the entire zoom range and a natural bokeh. Six ED glass elements reduce color aberrations, while a circular aperture with eleven blades is designed to create a soft bokeh. Sony puts great effort into error correction and relies on 27 lenses in 19 groups for high imaging performance.
The lens is equipped with an internal zoom design that keeps the length of the lens constant when zooming, thus ensuring stable handling. It is compatible with 1.4x and 2x teleconverters, which can extend the focal length to up to 1600 millimetres. However, this also doubles the aperture, so that an open aperture of only f/16 is possible at the longest focal length.
Two precise linear motors are said to offer fast and precise autofocus, which keeps pace with the continuous shooting speed of the Alpha 9 III of 120 frames per second. The integrated optical SteadyShot image stabilizer facilitates hand-held shots without blurring. Like the wide-angle lens, the zoom offers Breathing Compensation. Together with suitable cameras, it is designed to reduce unwanted image shifts during focusing.

With dimensions of 120 mm Ă— 346 mm and a weight of 2475 grams, the superzoom is neither small nor light. To ensure that the dimensions are still manageable, Sony relies on a slightly weaker aperture between f/6.3 and f/8.0, depending on the selected focal length. An adjustable clamp ensures a balanced weight distribution when used on a tripod. Numerous seals make the lens insensitive to dust and splash water. The three focus hold buttons distributed over the lens barrel can be assigned an alternative function via the camera.
