Sony lowers price of PS VR2 to 450 euros
Sony's VR headset PS VR2 is apparently not selling particularly well: the Japanese company is permanently reducing the price by 150 euros.

Sony wants to boost sales of its VR headset PS VR2 with a permanent price reduction. The headset, which has been available for two years, used to cost 600 euros, but was regularly available for less than 500 euros in practice.
Now the price is set to drop even lower: Sony is calling for a recommended retail price of 450 euros for PS VR2 in future, the Japanese company announced. According to Sony, this applies to the basic package with headset, controller and stereo headphones as well as the "Horizon Call of the Mountain" bundle, which also includes a code for the VR game. When asked, Sony confirmed to heise online that both variants should actually have the same price.
If the price recommendations are also implemented in practice, the bundle with the additional "Horizon" code is therefore the strictly better choice – the game regularly costs 70 euros if you buy it separately. To be able to play with the headset, you also need a Playstation 5. Alternatively, you can also use PS VR2 on a PC with SteamVR titles. However, you will need to buy a separate PC adapter for 60 euros.
Reverse step
The price reduction is remarkable because Sony once took the exact opposite approach with the Playstation 5: Sony had increased the price of its current games console from 400 to 450 euros after the launch. The fact that PS VR2 will now be cheaper is on the one hand nice for prospective customers. On the other hand, the price reduction can be seen as a further indication that the headset has not sold particularly well so far.

Sony has never published sales figures for the VR headset. However, there were reports of sluggish sales as early as 2023. Last March, Bloomberg reported that Sony had temporarily halted production of the headset. At the time, Sony was said to have sold 1.7 million units according to independent estimates by IDC, but had produced far more than two million.
The poor sales figures also mean that PS VR 2 is not very attractive as a platform for video game developers. Sony has not launched any noteworthy exclusive games for PS VR2 since the launch title "Horizon Call of the Mountain". The headset therefore lives on the console mainly from game ports that were originally developed for other VR platforms such as Metas Quest.
