Apple's desktop workstation: Mac Studio 2025 with M4 Max and M3 Ultra
Apple's Mac Studio makes the leap from the M2 to the M4 – as far as possible: The Ultra version of the top-of-the-range chip is based on the M3 generation.
This is how Apple envisions the M3 Ultra lifestyle.

Following the promised Air announcements – including the MacBook Air M4 – Apple is following up with a Mac Studio 2025. The manufacturer is now upgrading the workstation, which was not updated last year, with new Max and Ultra chips, albeit in an unusual generation mix: the base model of the Mac Studio is now available with the M4 Max (14-core CPU, 32-core GPU), which has been configurable in MacBook Pros since last fall. The model with 512 GB SSD costs 2500 euros – with 36 GB RAM instead of 32 GB. It is also 100 euros more expensive than its predecessor.
Thunderbolt 5 for the Mac Studio
There are now four USB-C ports with Thunderbolt 5 on the back, as well as two USB-A ports and 10 Gbit Ethernet, as before. On the front, there are still two USB-C ports, which have to make do without Thunderbolt in the base model. Nothing changes in terms of Wi-Fi support with 6E, support for Wi-Fi 7 remains absent.
Apple equips the Mac Studio variant, which is twice as expensive at €5,000, with the – also new – M3 Ultra. Here too, the price goes up, the predecessor with M2 Ultra started at 4,800 euros, but now has 94 instead of 64 GB RAM as a minimum on board.

New M3 Ultra, older generation
The M3 Ultra is made up of two M3 Max chips that are connected via a technology Apple calls "Ultra Fusion". According to Apple, the M3 Ultra is up to 1.5 times faster than the M2 Ultra. The entry-level version is based on a 28-core CPU with a 60-core GPU, with an optional 32-core CPU and 80-core GPU. The RAM can be upgraded to up to 512 GByte, a first for Apple's M-Chips, which previously stopped at 192 GByte.
Fully equipped with 16 TByte of memory, the new Mac Studio costs a good 17,600 euros. Apple left it open why there is no M4 Ultra. At least there is still a possible update for the Mac Pro, which was not updated on Wednesday and has so far performed at the same level as the Mac Studio.
