While German postal customers have recently been upset about postage increases and longer letter delivery times, the population in neighboring Denmark must prepare for an era without letter post. The Danish-Swedish postal company Postnord has announced that it will discontinue its letter service at the end of 2025 and focus exclusively on parcel deliveries from 2026. 1500 jobs are to be cut.
The reason given is that letter volumes have fallen by over 90 percent since 2000 and most Danes now receive messages digitally. However, the growing online trade has led to an increase in demand for parcel deliveries. This is not a purely Danish phenomenon: in the UK, for example, there is also a debate about whether letter deliveries will still be necessary on all working days in the future. Other countries want to use longer delivery times to collect letters first and reduce personnel costs.
Expensive prices, few letterboxes
However, Postnord is not entirely innocent of the developments in Denmark. Since the merger of the Danish and Swedish state postal services, consumers in both countries have criticized a deterioration in postal services. The number of letterboxes in Denmark has been reduced from 10,000 in 2010 to just 1,500 today. Anyone sending a letter has to pay around 3.35 euros for it –. Despite the high price, delivery only takes place after five working days. Faster delivery is only available for an additional charge. The high postage costs are also felt by travelers to Denmark. A postcard to Germany costs around 6.70 euros.

According to Postnord, all remaining letterboxes in Denmark will be removed by the end of December. December 18 is the last day to buy stamps, and letters will be delivered for the last time on December 30. However, only Denmark is affected by the decision – In Sweden, the letter service will continue unchanged.
Some questions remain unanswered
However, house owners in Denmark are still obliged to provide a letterbox. It is still unclear what will happen to international letter post. The Danish Ministry of Transport still wants to decide on a successor.
