Prime Video tests AI synchronization of films and series

The streaming service Prime Video has added AI dubbing voices to its selection of audio tracks for films and series. Amazon wants to reach even more potential users with this. This is because the offer will only be applied to licensed products that would otherwise not have been dubbed by humans.

The function will initially only be available in English and Latin American Spanish. Twelve films and series are already available with this feature, including the titles El Cid: La Leyenda, Mi Mamá Lora, and Long Lost.

According to Amazon, the program is a hybrid project. Experts for translations and subtitles are to work together with artificial intelligence to ensure appropriate quality. Further information and whether the project will also be extended to Germany are not known.

AI voices for reels and shorts are already frequently used in social media. Imitations of celebrities are also popular. It was only a matter of time before major production companies wanted to use AI not only for visual revisions but also for audio projects.

Magenta TV sets a bad example

At the beginning of February 2025, Deutsche Telekom removed the series "Murderesses" from its Magenta TV service. The Polish production was notable for its poor AI dubbing. The series is still available on Amazon's Viaplay channel, but the German AI dubbing voices also appear to have been removed.
