Instagram is probably working on a "community chat" function
In future, Instagram users will be able to chat in groups of up to 250 people. However, the function has not yet been officially announced.

Instagram is probably working on a group chat function "Community Chat". This allows users to chat in groups of up to 250 people. The function was discovered by developer Alessandro Paluzzi, who has repeatedly examined the backends of various apps such as Threads in the past and discovered planned functions.
Topics can be entered for the community chats. The control over who can join lies with the individual users. However, there is apparently an upper limit of 250 people per community. The upper limit for WhatsApp communities is around 500 people.

In contrast to WhatsApp channels, where creators send messages to followers, anyone can take part in communication in the community chat. There will also be integrated moderation functions, as can be seen from the screenshots shared by Paluzzi. Administrators will be able to remove messages and members, and community chats will also be checked for compliance with the guidelines. An Instagram spokesperson described the function to Engadget as an internal prototype that is not being tested outside the company.
