An update for the Pixel 4a released in January is intended to protect the battery from overheating. This is according to a notice from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). It recommends that consumers install the update for the Pixel 4a to avoid burns and fires.
Google released an update for the Pixel 4a in January, which reduced the battery life on numerous devices and caused longer charging times. Google did not directly address the reason for this. However, the company offers the option of having the Pixel 4a's battery replaced or securing a discount on the purchase of a new phone.
Because Google did not go into detail about the reasons for the update, some users suspected that Google was deliberately making older phones worse. In fact, however, there were many indications that Google wanted to reduce potential battery risks. Only the phones with a specific battery were affected. The batteries from other manufacturers in the Pixel 4a worked without any problems even after the update.
Battery replacement or credit note
“This issue does not affect all Pixel 4a devices,” the ACCC now confirms on its website. “If a consumer's device is not affected by the issue, the firmware update will have no impact on battery management and the device will function as before.”

Users of a Pixel 4a should always make sure their device is running the latest firmware version, the statement continues. Anyone who owns one of the affected phones should also contact Google to take advantage of one of the compensation offers. Google offers to replace the battery, for example. Alternatively, you can use the link to claim a refund or discount on a new purchase. The Pixel 4a will no longer be supplied with security updates.
