Android 16 achieves platform stability with the third beta
The final release is approaching, but this beta also brings new features. These include outline text for a higher-contrast text display.

The Android development team at Google has released the third beta for Android 16. This brings Android closer to the new main version, which is why the new features are limited. However, it does not do without new features for security and accessibility.
With beta 3, the mobile operating system version is considered to be platform stable. Platform stability means that the API interface is closed, the app-related behavior is final and that developers can now upload their apps to the Play Store with Android 16 as the target platform. Developers can find more information on the individual preview phases on the Android website.
New features for security and accessibility
According to the Android team, it was previously difficult for users with poor eyesight and therefore low contrast sensitivity to distinguish objects from the background. This is where the new feature called Outline Text comes in: a larger area around the text is now set off in high contrast, which should significantly improve readability. This function replaces the previously used High Contrast Text.

In addition to further accessibility updates, the Android team has also focused on security. In the third beta, it is possible to test the Local Network Protection (LNP) feature, which is planned for an upcoming major version of Android. It gives users more control over which apps can access devices within their local network.
The final release of Android 16 is scheduled for the second quarter of 2025, while a minor release with new developer APIs is planned for the fourth quarter of 2025. The latter is not expected to contain any planned changes that could affect the functionality of apps.
