Atari 2600 My Play Watch: Smart watch for playing pong

Nostalgia for the wrist: Atari has unveiled the Atari 2600 My Play Watch, a smart watch for fans of classic video games. The smartwatch can play "Pong", "Centipede", "Missile Command" and "Super Breakout" via touch display or crown and has an interface reminiscent of the menus of classic Atari consoles.

According to the Atari 2600 My Play Watch product page, the sound effects for the alarm clock, timer and audio feedback are also reminiscent of the Atari 2600 console. The Atari 2600 went on sale in the USA in 1977, and the classic console was available in Germany in 1978. Atari sells a retro reissue of the console as the Atari 2600+.

Only slightly smart

While the Atari 2600 My Play Watch gets the nostalgia receptors running at full speed, it is quite limited as a smartwatch. This is mainly due to the fact that the watch does not support Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. This means you can neither connect the watch to your cell phone nor download apps. This smartwatch is therefore not all that "smart".

Atari sells this as a feature: at least you don't have to stare at notifications all day and can instead concentrate fully on Pong in miniature (or at least the current time).

At least it supports a few basic fitness tracking functions and measures heart rate, steps taken and calories burned. The watch is also resistant to dust and submersion in water in accordance with IP68. The display of the smart watch is 2.02 inches in size and is based on TFT technology, so there was not enough space for an OLED panel.

Atari sells the 2600 My Play Watch on its own website for 80 US dollars. It is currently only available for pre-order and shipping is scheduled to begin on June 10. Delivery to Germany is possible. In addition to the watch, the package also includes three different wrist straps that can be freely interchanged.
