Meta AI launches in the EU: AI assistant available via chat

In the middle of the group chat, a question suddenly pops up: Is it called the or the Nutella? Who is the new managing director of Hannover 96? In such cases, no one should have to switch services in the future, but can ask Meta AI directly. The AI assistant is gradually moving into WhatsApp, Facebook, Messenger and Instagram in Germany and the EU. It also has access to the internet. However, its capabilities are limited in this country.

In the USA, for example, the AI assistant is also available for Ray-Ban smart glasses and can be controlled by voice. This is not yet the case in Germany. A chat function is available in Germany for now. Meta explains the reason for the delayed launch of the service in the EU: “Given the ongoing complexity of regulatory systems in Europe, it has taken longer than we would have liked to get our AI technology into the hands of Europeans.” It is a first step and the aim is to catch up with the USA in the long term and expand the offering.

Blue circle leads to the AI assistant

Meta AI can be accessed via a blue, round icon in the apps. You can use it to chat directly with the AI assistant. Initially, it is also available in WhatsApp in existing chats with other people –. To do this, you need to write “@Meta AI” followed by the prompt. In the other services, it must be used as a standalone chat, but it will soon be possible to use it in other chats as well. In the case of voice control for the glasses, Meta AI can also be activated with the words “Hey Meta”.

Meta AI can also search for content on a specific topic. Meta gives the example that you are planning a vacation in Canada and are looking for posts from friends and reels on Instagram that have to do with Canada – which the AI assistant can collect for you in the chat. This makes research easier.

Meta AI can also already be personalized in the USA. There is an image generator in the AI assistant as well as a reminder function and more. AI Studio can be used to create your own chatbots. Tests with chatbots of prominent personalities have been discontinued by Meta. It remains to be seen when further Meta AI functions will be approved in the EU. The specific regulatory obstacles are also unknown.
