Several German bodies of water have been given the name "Gulf of ..." by unknown persons. They seem to be making fun of Donald Trump and Google for renaming the Gulf of Mexico. Among other things, there is the"Gulf of SĂĽrth" in Cologne, which is supposed to be a small bay of the Rhine. But there is now also the"Gulf of Hanoland", although the author clearly writes that the name of his garden pond is sarcasm and irony. He says that if you can rename the Gulf of Mexico, he can do the same with his pond.
The names are not official changes and Google seems to be cracking down on them too, as it seems that some names beginning with "Gulf of" have already disappeared. In order to name the bodies of water, users apparently create attractions at the corresponding locations that could be of interest to tourists. It is not known whether Google checks these entries in advance.
Back on March 5, the news site mitelhessen.de reported on a case in which the Heuchelheimer Silbersee was renamed the "Gulf of Giessen". Since then, the idea seems to have found a few imitators. Similar names can now also be found in other large cities, as well as in rural areas throughout Germany.

Trump with renaming
At the beginning of his current term of office, US President Donald Trump had the Gulf of Mexico renamed the Gulf of America by decree. Google quickly followed suit and changed the name in Maps and Google Earth. As a result, there were many protests against this decision. Now German users seem to be making fun of it by renaming various bodies of water.
