New high-end power supplies: MSI leaves out most Radeon graphics cards

MSI is the first manufacturer to reduce the 8-pin connectors on power supply units to a minimum. Most RX-9000 GPUs only run with an adapter.

Nvidia's switch from the old PCI Express power connectors with eight and six pins to the 16-pin 12V 2x6 connector also affects the choice of connection for power supply units. Until now, manufacturers have circumvented possible compatibility problems by simply offering a sufficient number of both connector types. MSI is the first manufacturer to break with this approach.

The two power supply units MPG A1250GS and MPG A1000GS provide two 12V 2x6 connections for two graphics cards. Alternatively, there is only one 6+2 pin cable as standard for graphics cards without a 12V-2x6 connection. This limits their electrical power consumption within the specification to around 225 watts.

A second 8-pin cable can be connected, but only if one of the two EPS cables for processors is dispensed with and the PCIe cable is purchased separately. MSI offers PCIe 8-pin and EPS as a combined connection – but only one cable is included for the former. Since many motherboards nowadays have two EPS connectors for the CPU power supply, a reassignment would not be ideal.

The new MSI power supply units come with three cables for graphics cards: two 16-pin and one 8-pin.

As a result, most AMD graphics cards can only be operated with an adapter from 8 to 16 pins on the MSI power supply units. Only two manufacturers use 12V 2x6 connectors for their most expensive RX-9000 variants: Asrock for the Radeon RX 9070 XT Taichi (starting from 673 €) and Sapphire for the Nitro+ versions of the Radeon RX 9070 XT (starting from 699 €) and RX 9070 (starting from 618,87 €). All other top-of-the-range Radeon models use two or three 8-pin connectors.

Meanwhile, MSI no longer gives priority to AMD graphics cards. Within the RX 9000 series, MSI is not launching a single model of its own. Instead, the manufacturer is focusing solely on GeForce graphics cards from Nvidia.

The 12V 2x6 connectors are there for high-end graphics cards. For weaker graphics cards, most users would buy a power supply unit with a lower output anyway. Alternatively, the single 8-pin connector is sufficient for small transitional graphics cards.
