In 2024, Amazon claims to have removed over 15 million counterfeit products from circulation. This is twice as many as in the previous year, according to the online retailer's recently published brand protection report. Amazon emphasizes that it has already identified 99 percent of counterfeits before the affected brand owners were able to report them.
Amazon is also increasingly using AI to identify the affected products. According to Amazon, it scans billions of changes to product detail pages every day to detect possible counterfeits.
In its brand protection report for 2024, Amazon states that trademark infringements have decreased by 35 percent since 2020 and that more than 2.5 billion products have been verified as genuine by the Transparency Program. In addition, Amazon says it has already taken action against 24,000 "bad actors", as the company calls them, in the form of lawsuits and reports to law enforcement agencies.

Disposal
According to Amazon, counterfeits are properly disposed of and destroyed so that they do not enter the retail supply chain. It is not known what the procedure is regarding counterfeit products and whether they are recycled. In the past, Amazon has already been criticized for its approach to returns and new goods.
In 2022, the company was able to resell most of its returns and return 79% of its excess stock to suppliers, the company says. In the same year, however, there was also criticism of the actions of the world's largest online retailer. Research by Greenpeace, ZDF-Frontal and Business Insider in the same year also revealed that new goods are destroyed to prevent them from being resold by third parties.
