The payment service provider Digital River is laying off most of its employees and reducing operations to a minimum. The company operates various online stores for manufacturers such as AMD, Asus and Crucial as well as game studios such as Bandai Namco. Digital River has also worked with Microsoft and Kaspersky.

Some of the online stores operated by Digital River are either offline or no longer stock any products. Asus writes in its own notebook and smartphone store: "We regret to inform you that our online store will be temporarily closed. The reason for this is that Digital River, our authorized reseller and distributor, has run into financial difficulties. Please note that all accepted orders are honored and guaranteed by Asus [...]"

Asus sells hardware components such as graphics cards and motherboards via plentysystems (PlentyOne) – where sales continue as usual. Surprisingly, you can still add processors and graphics cards to your shopping cart at AMD and proceed to the checkout process. According to data protection regulations, AMD is still a Digital River customer.

Digital River already got into financial difficulties last year and was left owing payments as a result. In 2024, one of its largest customers, Kaspersky, was lost after the US government banned the sale of Kaspersky's antivirus software.

In January, unknown persons published an alleged internal memo from Digital River CEO Barry Kasoff on The Layoff, a forum specializing in redundancies, according to which the company will be almost completely shut down in the near future. According to the memo, the German branches, which are responsible for the European business, are also affected: Digital River GmbH and Digital River Holding GmbH. So far, insolvency proceedings have apparently only been initiated, but not yet opened – An insolvency announcement is not yet available.

The Star Tribune Minnesota newspaper draws attention to an announcement by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. It states that 122 US employees will be laid off – apparently as of today, March 28.
