Android updates for a period of seven years are not enough? Samsung goes one better for certain customers.
When Samsung and Google introduced a seven-year update guarantee for their Galaxy and Pixel smartphones, that was quite an announcement. Up to that point, a maximum of five years was not possible. With Samsung's Enterprise Edition of the Galaxy S25 series, customers get one more year of guaranteed Android updates and security patches.
Enterprise edition of the Galaxy S25 even gets Android 23
For years, Android update periods have been extended by some companies to the delight of customers in order to increase the secure service life of sometimes very expensive smartphones. Samsung's Galaxy S25 Enterprise Edition takes the lead with eight years of updates.

Samsung promises guaranteed updates for the Enterprise Edition of the S25 series until January 2032, while the "normal" models in the Galaxy S25 series will "already" stop receiving updates in January 2031.

The extra year is not entirely surprising, as Samsung usually offers an additional year of software update support for the enterprise editions of its high-end devices. The Galaxy S25 variant is no different.
8 years of updates also thanks to Qualcomm
The fact that Samsung can provide the Galaxy S25 Enterprise Edition with Android updates for such a long period of time is partly thanks to chip developer Qualcomm. This is because the Snapdragon 8 Elite installed in the S25 models is the first SoC (system-on-a-chip) to be guaranteed update support for eight years.
According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 8 Elite is not the only SoC to receive long-term support: The company's new 7 series is also promised up to eight years of support.

)However, long-term support does not only depend on Qualcomm, but also on the respective smartphone manufacturers, who have to provide the respective updates for their devices. Apart from Samsung and Google, only a few manufacturers cut a good figure in this area. Nevertheless, some companies, such as Honor with the Magic 7 Pro, at least offer a longer update period for their top models.
From mid-2025, the update situation for customers in the EU will ease, while manufacturers will be held accountable. In future, they will have to guarantee software updates for five years.
