The online marketplace Refurbed for used and refurbished products is reporting accelerated growth. While the company reached its first billion euros in total external sales in summer 2023 after around six years in business, it has already surpassed the two billion euros mark. The German market in particular has made a major contribution to this. More than 50 percent of this result was generated here. Beyond one billion euros in external sales have been achieved in Germany since the company was founded.

According to Refurbed, this makes it the fastest growing online marketplace for remanufactured products in German-speaking countries. The company has now sold more than 4 million remanufactured products there.

Refurbed co-founder Peter Windischhofer explained: “The fact that we have now reached the second billion euros in external sales shows that our mission is successful and that we are fulfilling consumers' wishes with our product range: Because this large sum proves how strong the demand for refurbished products and sustainable consumption now is.”

Refurbed, which was founded in Vienna in 2017, has gradually expanded its range to include new product categories, giving it a much larger product range than the specialist iPhone refurbisher Swappie, for example. Most recently, the “Baby & Kids” product category was added in February.

Refurbed is currently active in 11 countries. These include Germany, Austria, Sweden, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Denmark. Since June 2024, the online marketplace has also been available in Belgium, Finland, Portugal and the Czech Republic.

According to a representative Bitkom survey conducted last fall, 18% of Germans have bought a professionally refurbished smartphone for themselves or others. 30 percent have bought a used smartphone that was not professionally refurbished – from a private individual, for example. These figures include 8% who have bought both refurbished and second-hand smartphones.

49% of those who have already bought used smartphones did so to save money, 42% attach importance to sustainability and 39% want their decision to help reduce the consumption of raw materials. 21% see no added value in new devices – and 18% think that used devices are just as good as new devices.
