YouTube has officially released the cheaper “Premium Lite” subscription for all users in Germany. The tariff is not completely ad-free.

Around a month after the announcement, YouTube is offering its “Premium Lite” tariff in Germany without a waiting period. At 5.99 euros, the offer is cheaper than the full Premium package, which costs 12.99 euros per month.

According to YouTube, the Premium Lite plan is aimed at “anyone who wants to experience the majority of content on YouTube ad-free”. However, you will have to do without additional functions such as background playback or downloads. There is also no link to the music streaming service YouTube Music.

According to the company, content from the areas of gaming, fashion, beauty, news, comedy, cooking, learning “and more” is ad-free. However, advertising could appear for music content, shorts, search, and browsing.

This is not the first time YouTube has offered a Premium Lite subscription. The video platform introduced the option back in 2021, but only offered it to individual users in a limited number of countries. After just two years, YouTube initially scrapped the Lite option towards the end of 2023.

YouTube later tested the tariff sporadically. The current relaunch of the subscription is one euro cheaper than the previous version, for which YouTube charged seven euros.

In addition to the Lite tariff and the full Premium subscription, YouTube also offers an 18 euro family subscription for up to six people aged 13 and over. For students, YouTube Premium costs from seven euros. There is no family tariff for the Lite version.
