The US government has exempted certain electronic goods from the special tariffs against numerous countries – including China –. According to a statement from the Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the duties do not apply to smartphones, laptops, hard disks and memory chips, among other things. The authority is referring to a memorandum issued by US President Donald Trump on Friday (April 11). However, the White House has not yet published this memorandum itself.
The exemption is particularly important for electronics from China – Many devices, for example from US tech companies such as Apple, are manufactured there. While Trump had initially backtracked with most trading partners and temporarily suspended parts of the additional duties for 90 days, he had significantly tightened his stance towards Beijing. The US is now demanding additional tariffs of 145% on imports from China, while Beijing wants to levy 125% on US goods.

According to US media, however, this could only be a reprieve, as Trump has already announced that he will impose additional tariffs on certain industries.
