Bungie's new shooter is revealed in the first trailer: "Marathon" is a multiplayer shooter that, unlike Bungie's long-standing main project "Destiny", will cost money – How much is not yet known. The title is set to go on sale on September 23 for PC, Xbox Series X/S and Playstation 5.
Like the first edition published by Bungie in 1994, "Marathon" is set in a sci-fi universe, which opens up special skills such as invisibility and shields as game elements alongside weaponry. The game is played in teams of up to six players, who have to complete various mission objectives on the game maps. Bungie plans to offer three different maps at market launch. In addition to real players, you will also have to deal with bots in the multiplayer games.

Tough years for Bungie
Bungie is a legendary developer studio for shooters and has developed the earlier "Halo" games, among others. With its two 'Destiny' games, Bungie has been at the top of the Free2Play shooter market for years. Even after the release of "Marathon", "Destiny 2" will continue to be supplied with new content, Bungie promises.

The past few years have been turbulent for the studio. After the studio became independent from Microsoft in 2007, it worked closely with Activision-Blizzard. In 2022, Microsoft competitor Sony finally bought the renowned shooter studio for 3.6 billion US dollars. Since then, hundreds of developers have had to leave, with Bungie firing a third of its workforce in 2024 alone.
With "Marathon", Bungie is now turning away from its free2play philosophy that once made the "Destiny" games so successful. Selling online shooters for money means a higher barrier to entry and potentially lower player numbers. From a player perspective, the question also arises as to whether Bungie will refrain from selling microtransactions in view of the entry price – There is no information on this as yet.
