OpenAI makes gpt-image-1 accessible in the existing Images API. This means that the latest version of the image generator can now also be integrated into other services and applications. OpenAI writes that developers can, for example, offer professional, customizable graphics directly in their tools and platforms. Integration into the Responses API is to follow.
Since image generation has been available in ChatGPT, 130 million people worldwide have used it to generate 700 million images, according to OpenAI. This is the same native multimodal model that is now also available via API. It can be used to mimic styles, and the model is particularly good at following guidelines and rendering text.

“From the creative industry to online retail to the B2B world and more – it remains exciting to see what developers, start-ups and companies will do with image generation in the API,” writes OpenAI.
Image generation made easy with ChatGPT
Many people used the image generator in ChatGPT to transform images of themselves and memes in the style of Studio Ghibli films in an initial hype. This was followed by a trend towards generated action figures with typical accessories for a certain type of person or for themselves.
In addition, image generation in ChatGPT shines with lax ethical guidelines. Images from films or well-known personalities can be used without any problems. However, they should be protected by copyright. OpenAI, on the other hand, says that fewer guidelines offer more freedom. “We think it's right to put this intellectual freedom and control in the hands of users, but we'll watch how it evolves and listen to society,” wrote CEO Sam Altman at X.
Both image generation via ChatGPT and via API are subject to the same guidelines. Content must not harm anyone, for example. However, developers also have the option of defining further rules and there are moderation settings. The images are also provided with C2PA metadata. The prices can be seen in the blog post.
