Advertisers from all over the world can now place ads on Meta's short message service Threads. This has now been announced by the US company. Initially, the ads will only be displayed “in selected markets” and will later be distributed in more and more countries. The ads will be placed directly in the feed of threads. However, it is not yet clear when exactly they will come to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Meta began testing advertising in threads for users in the USA and Japan in January. Initially, only a small percentage of them saw them.
Advertising much earlier than promised
When advertising was introduced in January, Meta explained that advertisers could use the content filters familiar from Instagram and Facebook to decide which content their ads would appear next to. Users themselves will also be able to hide or report ads that they do not like. Threads has announced extensive tests for this. The company has now announced that it will “continue to test and learn”. The company also writes that advertising is intended to “help people deepen their connections to the companies they live with”. Threads should actually remain ad-free as long as there are not one billion people on it.

According to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Threads already had more than 320 million active users at least once a month at the end of January, with over 100 million using the app every day. At that time, however, more than one million people were already creating an account every day. At this rate, the short messaging service should currently have around 400 million accounts, which will soon be able to display advertisements. Meanwhile, Bluesky has only just passed the 35 million account mark, while the much older Mastodon has around 900,000 monthly active users and 8 million accounts.
