Pixel 7a Battery problems: Google offers battery replacement or goodwill service

Google admits that the batteries in some Pixel 7a smartphones can inflate. The company has launched an extended repair program for affected devices.

As part of the program, users of a Pixel 7a "may be eligible for a free repair to replace the battery". Depending on the warranty status, Google is also offering another goodwill service of up to 400 euros.

Pixel 7a battery bloat: Google lists symptoms

According to Google, not all Pixel 7a devices are affected. In a Pixel smartphone with a corresponding battery problem, the back of the device could be curved and generally appear thicker than usual. Another indication is a curved or even detached smartphone cover on the back.

If the smartphone's battery discharges significantly faster than usual or can no longer be charged, even with little use, there could also be a claim, according to Google.

If a Pixel 7a model meets the above requirements, Google will replace the battery once free of charge as part of the program. Users can check whether they are eligible via a dedicated registration page. The program is offered in the USA, India, Canada, the UK, Germany, Japan and Singapore.

Not all devices get a new battery

Google would like to point out that the free battery replacement will not be carried out under certain circumstances. If the smartphone shows further damage caused by "liquids, sharp objects or excessive force, it may not be eligible for a free battery replacement".

If it is not possible to send the affected device in for repair and an on-site repair is not desired or not feasible, Google offers a goodwill solution as an alternative. For devices outside of the limited warranty or the statutory warranty, users will receive a payment of 200 US dollars (approx. 175 euros) or a discount code for the Google Store in the amount of 300 US dollars (approx. 260 euros), which can be used to purchase another Pixel smartphone. The discount code is valid for one year from the date of issue.

If the defective Pixel 7a is still within the statutory warranty period, Google is offering a payment of 456 US dollars (approx. 400 euros).
