Android 14, which was released in August 2023, is the most widely used operating system from Google with a distribution of 27.4 percent. The latest version, Android 15, which was released in September 2024, reaches 4.5 percent according to official figures.
Older Android versions, which Google no longer provides with security patches, are also still in a prominent position: Android 11 is still running on 15.9 percent of all devices, and Android 12/12L still has 12.8 percent of smartphones installed. Google discontinued official support for Android 12 a few days ago.
Google publishes figures on version distribution at irregular intervals in the Android Studio development environment. The most recent figures, which 9 to 5 Google first discovered, are from April 1, 2025. The data shows active devices that have contacted the Google Play Store within a period of seven days.

Android 15: No Samsung devices included yet
The devices on which Android 15 was already installed at the beginning of April include models from Google, Nothing, Oppo and Oneplus. At the time, market leader Samsung had only launched the Galaxy S25 series and a few mid-range models with the new Android version.

The major rollout to other Galaxy devices only began on April 7. During this period, Samsung tested the beta version of One UI 7, which was only released in the last few weeks. The number of devices based on Android 15 is likely to increase accordingly over the coming months. However, Google will not be able to publish new distribution figures for another year.

Android 16 shortly before release
While the share of Android 15 is likely to grow continuously, the next version is already just around the corner: according to Google, Android 16 will be released in June. This means that there will be a few months less time between Android versions than was previously the case.
The first devices should receive the new Android version in June. As in previous years, Google's Pixel models will be the first. There are also indications that Samsung will not wait as long to distribute the update to One UI 8 based on Android 16 as it did with One UI 7. The first Galaxy devices with Android 16 will reportedly be released in July.
