Google seems to have forgotten a massive software error with the Pixel 9a. As reported by some users in Google's support forum, as well as Amazon and Heise readers, they are unable to set up their new smartphone.
Pixel 9a: Some users inescapably end up in the fastboot loop
During the set-up process, immediately after selecting the language, the device is deleted and then put into fastboot mode. According to the reports, the device can no longer be taken out of this mode. Fastboot mode grants access to an extended bootloader that normal users do not normally see and do not need to see.

As users report, every attempt to get out of fastboot mode fails. Google support does not seem to be able to help either. The only solution currently available to get a working Pixel 9a is to send in the affected device and replace it. However, one user reports that he has the same problem with the second device.
It is difficult to determine how widespread the issue with setting up the Pixel 9a actually is. The model that Google sent to the c't editorial team for testing could be set up without any issues. An inquiry by heise online to Google Germany revealed that the company was not yet aware of the issue.
Pixel 9a: Google had to postpone the start of sales
Even if the extent of the initial setup issue is not tangible, Google already had a small “hiccup” during the announcement of the Pixel 9a. Originally, sales were supposed to start shortly after the announcement in March. However, the company identified an issue “that only affects a few devices”, meaning that it has only been delivered to customers since April 14.
