With the “Android Show”, Google is separating the most important announcements relating to its mobile operating system from the major developer conference I/O. The Android event will take place on May 13 – one week before Google I/O, which begins on May 20.
Despite the “Android show”: Android will also play a role at I/O
In a media note that Google shared with the US press, it says that the company is announcing the most important Android innovations in advance because there is so much to talk about this year. The pre-recorded show will be hosted by Google's head of the Android ecosystem, Sameer Samat.

Android fans are likely to view the decoupling positively, as Google's mobile operating system has played a minor role at I/O in recent years. During the last few conferences, almost everything revolved around AI. However, some announcements, such as the Gemini chatbot and “Project Astra”, were also highly relevant for Android.

Some of what Google has up its sleeve for Android is already clear. For example, the manufacturer will reveal more about the update to Android 16, which is due to be released in June.
As can be seen from the I/O program, Google is presenting a new user interface design called “Material 3 Expressive”, which, according to initial leaks, is intended to give Android a little more color. Android XR, the XR operating system for MR headsets and AR glasses announced in December, will also play an important role at the events. The first headsets based on the operating system are expected before the end of this year.
Google is also likely to reveal a little more about the roadmap for integrating Gemini into cars, watches and other products in the ecosystem. The company has already announced its intention to discontinue Google Assistant by the end of the year and replace it with Gemini.
According to Google, the “Android Show I/O Edition” will begin on May 13 at 7 p.m. Central European Summer Time and will be broadcast on YouTube and Google's website.
