Access to the internet, telephone network, television, radio, and text messaging services went down in several communities in Greenland on Monday, possibly as a result of the historic power outage in Spain and Portugal. At any rate, this is suggested by a statement from the Greenlandic postal and telecommunications company Tusass, which makes this connection. It states that there is no contact with the provider's facilities in Maspalomas on Gran Canaria, “which we urgently need to supply customers in the satellite areas”. They are in the process of solving the problem and are trying to determine whether the problem is related to the major power outage.
No power outage in the Canary Islands
Whether there is actually a connection between the loss of satellite services and the blackout is still unclear. In fact, the power supply only collapsed on the Iberian Peninsula on Monday; the Spanish archipelagos of the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands were not affected. It is therefore unclear to what extent the systems on Gran Canaria may have been impacted. According to the news agency dpa, however, at least on the Balearic Islands, some people reported issues with their cell phone networks after the blackout began on Monday afternoon, which could be due to difficulties experienced by the national providers.

At exactly 12:32 pm on Monday, the power grid collapsed in Spain and Portugal, the cause of which is still unknown. As a result, countless people were trapped in subways, trains and elevators, many stores closed their doors or only accepted cash. The emergency power supply had to be activated in hospitals. There were sometimes chaotic scenes on the streets because the traffic lights had gone out. Many people were effectively unable to work. The power only returned to the capital cities of Madrid and Lisbon after dark, and normality is now returning across the country. The incident in Greenland now suggests that the consequences may have extended far beyond the peninsula.
