The Tasmanian shipbuilding company Incat Tasmania has built the "China Zorrilla" (Hull 096 for the hull), probably the largest battery-powered passenger ferry in the world. It was launched on Friday at a shipyard in Hobart, the capital of the Australian island state of Tasmania. The ship is 130 meters long and contains a 40 MWh battery. The battery alone weighs 250 tons.
The 130 m long and 32 m wide ship is built like a catamaran, is fully battery-powered and can accommodate up to 2100 passengers and up to 225 vehicles. It is due to start its service between Buenos Aires and Uruguay and will be used in the ferry service on the RĂo de la Plata.
From liquid gas to electric propulsion
The ship was originally intended to run on liquid gas, but will now be electrified with an Energy Storage System (ESS) with a total stored energy of 40 MWh. All batteries together will weigh around 250 tons, Incat writes in a press release. Eight electrically powered water jets propel the ship.

"We are not just building a ship – we are building the future," said Stephen Casey, CEO of Incat. "Hull 096 proves that large-scale, low-emission transportation solutions are not only possible, they are available now."
Casey is referring to environmentally friendly propulsion systems for shipping that operate emission-free and are intended to help the sector transition to net-zero emissions.
Interior outfitting of the "China Zorilla"
Following the successful launch, the interior of the "China Zorrilla" is now to be fitted out. This includes a 2300 m² duty-free retail deck. This will be the world's largest retail space on a ferry. In addition, the energy system with the batteries still needs to be installed. According to Incat's plans, sea trials will then take place. This will initially take place on the River Derwent.

According to Incat, the "China Zorrilla" is not only the largest electric ship in the world at 130 m in length, but is also set to be the largest electric vehicle of its kind. This makes it one of the most important single exports in Australian industrial history.
