The video platform YouTube is trying out new subscription models to drive growth. As reported by Moneycontrol and The Verge, among others, the company is offering some users a "YouTube Premium Duo" tariff. The new test tariff offers selected users YouTube Premium at a reduced price for two people.

According to the Moneycontrol report, YouTube is initially testing the new Premium subscription level with selected users in India, France, Taiwan and Hong Kong. The company confirmed the plans to The Verge:

"We’re experimenting with new ways to provide greater flexibility and value to our YouTube Premium subscribers, including offering a two-person Premium plan option, allowing two people to share a subscription at a reduced cost."

The new plan allows users to share their Youtube Premium or Youtube Music subscription with another household member. The tariff is subject to conditions: Both members must be at least 13 years old, have a Google account and be part of the same Google Family Group.

The company does not explain the criteria according to which customers are offered the new option. It is also unclear whether YouTube will offer the new tariff level for testing in other countries at a later date.

The Duo tariff is positioned between the family and individual subscription and is suitable for couples, roommates and smaller households for whom the family subscription may not be worthwhile.

In France, the Duo subscription costs 19.99 euros in the pilot phase, while the single tariff costs 12.99 euros. The YouTube Premium family subscription costs 23.99 euros per month. The company currently offers YouTube Premium as a single subscription and as a family subscription. The latter can be used by up to six people. There is also a discounted individual subscription for students.

The pilot project for the Duo tariff follows the nationwide introduction of the "Youtube Premium Lite" tariff, which the company had previously tested in some countries. With the Premium Lite tariff, most videos can be viewed ad-free. In addition to ad-free music videos, the full Premium tariff also includes offline downloads and music playback in the background.
